Clearing The Roads Of Older Vans
The UK government have put forward proposals to use the same £2K car scrapping deal that is in action for cars, on vans as well. At the moment if you own a car that is over 9 years old, the government will pay you £1000 and scrap it for free. Then, if you decide to buy a new car, the manufacturer will give you another £1000. The theory behind this is that it will not only remove unsafe cars from Britain’s roads but also help stimulate the new car markets. The first set of results from the scheme are looking positive, with initial indications showing a 9.5% increase on last year for sales of new cars.
The government have been spurred on by the positive effects of the initiative and have revealed that there are plans in the pipeline to adopt the same strategy for vans. The van industry is suffering much the same as the new car market, with construction industries gearing down and more companies choosing to lease vans instead of choosing to buy. The method behind the initiative would work in a very similar way, with around one thousand pounds being given to owners of vans to scrap them if they are over nine years old. There would then be another incentive, which is yet to be agreed by van manufacturers, to purchase a new van rather than take a Vauxhall van leasing deal for example
Manufacturers such as Nissan, Mercedes and Ford have already agreed to the idea and are eager to put it into action. Ford’s spokesman Tim Miles said “anything that boosts the van market and helps keep people in their jobs can only be a good thing”. He went on to say that ford van leasing still is a big business for them but they would still prefer people buy new. There are a great many safety features in new vans that simply were not around 9 years ago. The number of serious injuries that people sustain in vans each year could be brought down substantially if more people traded their old van in for a new one.
